Shopping List

When I started researching the Paleo Diet, I quickly came to realize that my pantry and fridge weren’t exactly stocked.
Here’s a good starting list for the things you’ll really need to get you on the Path to Paleo.

Most of the items were found at Bulk Barn, Fortinos, Nature’s Emporium or Whole Foods.  If it came from somewhere else, I’ll make a note beside the items.

Flours
Almond Flour (or meal)  Blanched or unblanched (I use unblanched)
Potato Flour
Tapioca Starch
Tapioca Flour
Coconut Flour  (Now at Bulk Barn and it’s organic!)

Oils
A GOOD olive oil (one for putting on salads…try not to cook with it)
Coconut oil  (Costco has the best price overall)
Avocado oil (Fortinos or Costco)

Clarified Butter (Ghee) at Costco. Keep it in a cool, dark place and it will last for ages

Seeds and Nuts & Snacks
All of these in moderation
Almond (whole and slicedCostco is great for both types
Flax seeds  (Costco)
Chia seeds  (Costco)
Walnuts (chopped) (Costco)
Pecans (Costco)
Cashews (unsalted)
Sunflower seeds
Pumpkin seeds
Dried cherries, blueberries, mangoes,  rraspberries, and cranberries
Dark chocolate (75% cacao or better)
snacks

Baking supplies
Almond Butter     (Costco has a nice big jar for a fairly decent price)
Cashew Butter (So good on Granny Smith apples!)
Tahini (sesame seed butter)
Clarified Butter/Ghee (found at Fortinos across from the tea section)
A good honey (organic is preferable and try a variety of flavours for fun!)
Maple syrup
Coconut sugar
Gluten free/cornstarch free baking soda and baking power (Whole Foods)
Pitted Dates (wait til you see my caramel cream cheese cake!)
Dark cocoa (Bought mine at Costco.  See photo above)
Unsweetened shredded coconut
Organic vanilla extract
Gelatin (regular or “Agar” sea vegetable {Whole Foods or Nature’s Emporium)

Sauces
Cans of crushed and diced tomatoes
Tomato paste
Tomato sauce (the least amount of sugar you can find…or make your own!)

Chicken, beef or vegetable stock (Costco has great organic options in a 6 pack)
Sriracha chili sauce (made for boiled eggs or omelettes!) Costco  
Coconut aminos (Whole Foods or Nature’s Emporium)

Spices
Sea salt
Black pepper

Proteins
Do your best to find grass-fed beef, lamb and pork and WILD seafood. Farmed fish is usually fed GRAIN so they grow fast and fat.  Not what you’re looking for!!!
Bison burgers (Nature’s Emporium, Whole Foods)
Tuna
Haddock
Cod
Pacific Salmon
Organic eggs (free run/free range)
Bacon…but go easy on it! (nitrate free…sugar free…)
Shrimp
Scallops
Calamari
Chicken (limit intake as it can have lots of Omega 6)

So that’s it!  You’ve just gone through most of my kitchen!  It took me about 2 months to get to this stage of Paleo readiness.  Do what you can.  Any step to a healthier life is a step in the right direction.
