My Paleo Mantra goes like this: no grains, no dairy, no legumes, and no processed sugars. Why? Well…since I didn’t set foot in one high school chemistry or biology class, I’m probably not the best authority here.
If you want all the science, visit robbwolf.com. I bought his book, The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet, and I encourage you to do the same or borrow if from someone (maybe me!) I also love Juli Bauer’s, OMG, That’s Paleo?
How do I remember which foods are good and which aren’t? I just keep these three points in mind.
1. If it’s something that we feed animals to make them fat, avoid it. This refers to grains like wheat, rice, barley, buckwheat, quinoa, hemp hearts, and corn.
2. If it is milk from a mammal other than a human, avoid it.
This means cheese, yogurt, ice cream, cream etc.
3. If it’s full of chemicals or any type of processed sugar (including high fructose corn syrup and its by-products), avoid it.
For some of you, this is just going to suck. I’ve been there and I know what you will go through. YOU WILL SUCCEED!
- Grass-produced meats
- Fresh fruits and veggies
- Nuts and seeds
- Healthful oils (Olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, coconut)
Rice (all types)
All other packaged, boxed, or packets of artificial sugars
Aspartame (NutraSweet or Equal)
High-fructose corn syrup
Palm kernel oil
Partially hydrogenated oil
Beans (kidney, black etc)
Pasta of all types
Protein shakes (filled with all types of stuff that isn’t paleo)
Alcohol (no…not even hard cider. Sorry)
This is a very basic starting point. Don’t worry, we’ll get through this. Start by getting rid of the junk you have hiding in your fridge, freezer, pantry and cupboards. Oh…you should likely let your family in on what you’re about to do. 🙂 It could be a nasty surprise to find leafy green veggies in the fridge instead of that 12 pack of Coke and last night’s leftover Cheeselovers pizza!
